COURT RESURFACING - The Blue and Green Courts are Here! Our resurfacing project is complete. With financial commitments from the PH Recreation and Park District and the Mt. Diablo Unified School District and anticipated club members' contributions, the cracked and flawed surface has been turned into a beautiful blue and green surface.
The two districts contributed 1/3 each of the projected cost of $25,500, with the club responsible for the remaining $8,500.
The Grand Opening of the courts occurred on August 30th with local dignataries in attendance: Bob Berggren, General Manager, PHRPD; Karen Mitchoff, PHRPD Vice Chair; and Charlie Daly, CEO, PH Chamber of Commerce. After official ceremonies, ribbon cutting and refreshments, PH members initiated the courts with a few rounds of tennis play.
Club Presents $500 Checkto College Park Boys Tennis Team
In accordance with recently established Club policy to further support tennis in our community, a $500 check was presented to the College Park boys' tennis team in early February by Jim Utz, the Club's Community Liaison officer.
Pictured with Jim are varsity captain Taylor McAuliffe and #3 varsity player Chris Liu, and coach Deborah Gantt. A $500 check was presented to the girls' tennis team last fall.

Part II - Encore! - Our Ken Strikes AgainOur Ken (see below) struck again on Sunday, May 4 with yet another work party! Here is Ken's report (thank you to Ken for Part II): Eleven volunteers gathered at the PHTC courts for Work Party #3 with paint rollers, brushes and other tools. By early afternoon the backside of the backboard was scraped anew, primed and top coat painted, the court benches were spruced up, the bulletin board was improved and given a final coat, and the Pleasant Hill Tennis Club sign on the playing side of the backboard was renewed. Tom Butler showed up (and stayed late) with goodies, coffee and hot chocolate, ice for water and soft drinks. Strong wind prevented use of Jerry Vurek's power paint sprayer (as usual), but the rollers went into action and did the heavy work. The goodies gave us an excuse for mixing work with eating, making the time spent more enjoyable. A big hand for the volunteers, some of whom have been involved with earlier work projects this year: Tom Butler, Ken Castleton, Orlando DeVita, Sharon Doherty, Mario Novelo, Wayne Quan, Dick Reed, Larry Sanders, Bill Sherrard, Jerry Vurek and Judith Zinke.
Red Square and the Great (Green) WallKen Castleton, our Maintenance guru organized a super colossal work party for us at the courts on Thursday and Friday, April 10 and 11. Ken made sure that everything worked in the most efficient (and correct) manner. Fourteen of us worked on sanding, painting and stenciling the seven benches, repairing the windscreens, staining the bleachers, cleaning red square, replacing our worn out signs, eliminating the weeds, patching the courts and, in an almost unbelievable endeavor, the enormous green wall was scraped and repainted. Even the parking lot side received some scraping. Ken, Tom Butler and Sherry Liu provided coffee, pastries and a lovely lunch highlighed by Sherry's delicious entree. Workers were: Ken (Chief), Sherry, Tom, Ed Cohn, Dick Reed, John Kaigas, Jerry Vurek, Jack Moskowitz, Larry Jubelirer, Dee Ferris, Wayne Quan, Lou Pappas, and Rita and Jim Utz.
